DISPENSING KNOWLEDGE

Cannabis Strains and Their Effects – Indica, Sativa, Hybrid, and CBD

How many types of cannabis are there? It’s an honest question. Biologically speaking, Cannabis is just a type of flowering plant. Growers typically recognize three distinct species: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis.

Over the years, these species have been bred into hybrid strains. That's why we have so many diverse options at our Cambridge dispensary.

Strains and THC: The Basics

Each different strain of cannabis offers its own trove of medicinal benefits. Some strains have a higher percentage of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the best-known and main psychoactive compound in cannabis plants. When it comes to the effects of a particular strain, however, THC isn't the whole story. Understanding the genetic make-up – essentially Sativa vs. Indica – is a good way to start making sense of the options available.

Sativa – The effects of Sativa tend to be mentally stimulating but physically relaxing. People tend to feel energetic, uplifted, and ready for physical activity or creative pursuits.

Indica – The full-body effects of Indica strains tend to be more relaxing, and are associated with calming, sedative feelings which may assist people who have trouble sleeping.

Hybrid – Hybrid strains are the result of crossbreeding cannabis sativa and cannabis indica. Each Hybrid strain has its own unique balance between Indica and Sativa, and the effects will vary accordingly based on a given strain’s ratio of the two.

High CBD – Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a cannabis compound that has important medical benefits without the same psychoactive effects typically associated with THC. The idea behind High CBD strains is to provide an analgesic, or pain-relieving, effect without the “head high” commonly associated with cannabis. There is ongoing research into potential benefits of CBD’s ability to treat a number of conditions, such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, depression, and others.

At Sira Naturals, part of our mission is to help you find the appropriate products for your unique needs. That's why we invest so much time and care into cultivating the highest-quality flowers, oils, and edibles. It is important to us that each person connect with the right treatment.

On our site, flowered products are divided into 4 categories: Sativa, Indica, Hybrid, and High CBD. The effects will vary from person-to-person and will also depend on how the cannabis is consumed. Other factors, such as a person’s expectations and environmental factors may also contribute to the effect of each strain.

Choices, Choices, Choices

Cannabis affects everyone differently, so as you explore options for treatment, use this information simply as a guide. Scientific research continues to seek a better understanding of how species and strain are related to the chemical compounds present in the flowers. The cannabis industry is innovating new ways to responsibly grow and use cannabis on a consistent basis. As the community grows and barriers to research disappear, that collective knowledge of cannabis will increase dramatically.

Sira Naturals is committed to remaining up-to-date on the latest research, fresh insights, and best practices. Our goal is to deliver the most accurate information and highest quality care possible.
